Sei shonagon’s pillow book is a collection of journal entries about a female court. It gives the reader a great understanding of how life must have been during the heian period. During the heian period, women were in charge of setting the fashion, cultural, and behavioral standards.

Sei Shonagon’s diary gives the reader a great understanding of how life was during this elegant period. Her random entries of her dislikes, likes, and daily observances give great insight to this old but sophisticated civilization. Women were in the background of church and state, but they held very active lives. They were influential in many ways. During the Heian period, women were in charge of setting the fashion, cultural, and behavioral standards.
